Snow Crab Industry to Form Co-operative Working Group
AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Snow Crab Industry to Form Co-operative Working Group
The snow crab industry has come together to work on issues that are impeding its growth, says Ernest Fage, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.
In August, following several crab-related issues, Mr. Fage proposed that industry representatives form a working group to discuss issues and develop long-term solutions. Every sector of the industry has expressed concern about a range of issues, including pricing, free trade, licensing policies, lost work and planning for the future.
Yesterday's three-hour meeting in Port Hawkesbury was attended by over 70 people representing plant workers and owners, fishermen and buyers.
"The initial meeting was a success because it was well attended and gave everyone an opportunity to put their issues on the table," said Mr. Fage.
Those who attended the meeting agreed to work together for the betterment of the industry.
"It is a priority that we establish a rapport among sectors of the industry that traditionally have not discussed issues pertaining to their fishery," said the minister. "Relationships need to be developed so that there is mutual respect for the legitimate interests of all sectors in the snow crab industry."
Each sector was asked to appoint representatives to participate on the working group. The department wants most of the work of the group to be completed during the fall and early winter. An initial meeting of the working group is planned for October.
