Upgrades and Additions to École Rose des Vents

Students and staff of École Rose des Vents in Greenwood, Kings Co., learned today, Sep. 13, that major renovations are planned for their school over the next few years.

During a ceremony at the school, MLA Jon Carey, on behalf of Education Minister Jane Purves, unveiled plans that include the construction of a new gymnasium, cafeteria, music room and classrooms. Upgrades and additions throughout the building will bring the school up to current standards.

"These upgrades give École Rose des Vents a longer life and help to meet the needs of francophone students in the Annapolis Valley," said Mr. Carey. "The school will continue to be a centre for cultural identity in the region for many years to come."

The $6-million upgrade and addition program will be carried out in phases over the next four years. The first phase of the project includes a roof replacement and is scheduled for completion in December. It is expected that the entire renovation project will be completed by September 2006.

"The educational community of École Rose-des-Vents is pleased to learn that the school renovation project will receive funding," said Louis Cormier, principal of École Rose des Vents. "These renovations will enable people with special needs to access the entire school. Furthermore, this project will allow the school to provide all courses offered in the public school program."

The phased approach to the renovations will minimize disruption at the school by carrying out work on the cafeteria, corridors, gymnasium and library during the summer months, when the school is not in use.

"This project is significant for the parents, the students and the staff of École Rose-des-Vents," said Hélène Lavigne, the Greenwood region's representative on the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP). "On behalf of the CSAP board members, I am delighted that the Department of Education has committed to the renovations."

École Rose des Vents accommodates about 250 students in grades primary to 12.
