DISABLED PERSONS' COMMISSION--Commission Welcomes Interim Executive Director
The Nova Scotia Disabled Persons' Commission today announced the interim appointment of its new executive director. Judy Hughes comes to the commission with 30 years' community and government experience.
"Ms. Hughes comes to the position with a wealth of experience," said commission chairperson Ralph Ferguson. "She also brings commitment to social justice issues and working towards inclusion for all."
Prior to her appointment, Ms. Hughes worked as executive director of the Pictou County Persons with Disabilities Partnership Society. In that position, she also co-ordinated an employment agency for people with disabilities, called Pictou County Let Abilities Work.
Ms. Hughes began her career working with unemployed youth in the 1970s. During the 1980s, she worked with six provincial government departments during her five-year term as co-ordinator of the Family Violence Prevention Initiative. For more than two years she travelled the country on behalf of the federal government with the Canadian Panel on Violence Against Women.
