Premier, Mayor Commit to Harbour Clean-Up

Premier John Hamm and Peter Kelly, mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality, spoke by telephone today, Sept. 3, to clarify the situation regarding funding of the Halifax Harbour cleanup project.

"Based on my conversation with the premier," said Mr. Kelly, "I am now convinced that the province is committed to working with HRM to find the best way to provide its share of the funding needed. We now look forward to future actions that reflect the understandings presented today."

The premier echoed the mayor's comments.

"I appreciate the opportunity to clarify our position directly with Mayor Kelly," he said. "Halifax Harbour cleanup has always been a priority with our government. By working together, HRM and the province will have the best opportunity to negotiate a significant federal contribution."

Premier Hamm and Mr. Kelly have instructed their senior officials to negotiate the terms and parameters of such a cost-sharing agreement.

"I look forward to finalizing these funding arrangements, as the province continues to negotiate federal funding for our dual objectives -- Halifax Harbour cleanup and highway improvements," said Premier Hamm.

The premier and mayor are scheduled to meet Friday, Sept. 6, to discuss this and other issues.
