Boards Will Hear Two Complaints

Nova Scotia's Human Rights Commission has appointed two boards of inquiry to consider complaints of gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace.

The first complaint involves Karen Davison of Halifax, who alleges that while working for the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association, she was subjected to sexual harassment and then to retaliation for filing a complaint with the commission.

In the second complaint, Brenda Daniels of Kentville alleges that the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board discriminated against her on the basis of her sex when it did not consider her for a job competition. Ms. Daniels, who applied for the position of maintenance foreman, contends that her application was screened out when the selection committee realized that she was female.

Jennifer Bankier has been appointed as board of inquiry chair for the Karen Davison complaint, to be heard Aug. 6 at 9 a.m. at the Howard Johnson Hotel, Lakeside Room, Halifax. Susan Ashley has been appointed to hear the Brenda Daniels complaint beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 13 in Salon A, Old Orchard Inn, Kentville.

Boards of inquiry are the final stage in the human rights complaint process. Boards of inquiry are independent, public hearings into complaints of discrimination.
