NOTE TO EDITORS: The following is a description of the events in the 2002 Nova Scotia Surf League lifesaving competition.

SURF RACE
The surf race is an open-ocean swim where competitors race from shore, around a buoyed course, and finish back on shore.

TAPLIN RELAY
The Taplin relay is a three-person event involving a board race, swim race and a running race. Each team member completes one of the three races. The winning team must have completed all three races.

MIXED BOARD RESCUE
The mixed board rescue is a team event in which one of the two members must be male and the other female. One competitor starts from shore and swims to a buoy. Upon reaching the buoy their teammate enters the water on a rescue board, proceeds to pick up the teammate at the buoy, and both head back into shore to finish.

BEACH SPRINT
The beach sprint is a 90-metre all-out run in designated lanes on the beach. Competitors race side by side in the preliminaries. Those with the top times move on to a final round.
