TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Repaving Begins on Route 329, Lunenburg County

Work has started on a highway improvement project on Route 329, near Hubbards, Lunenburg Co.

About six kilometres of road will be repaved between Hubbards and Mill Cove Park. The highway will have a full lane closure during the work.

Traffic control persons and a pilot vehicle will guide traffic through the site. Motorists are urged to use caution when they travel through this project area. They should be mindful of not only their own safety but also the safety of employees on the job site.

The contract for this repaving was awarded to Dexter Construction Company Limited of Bedford on a tender bid of $817,000. The project is expected to be completed by the third week of August.

The province has invested about $2.5 million in Lunenburg County roads so far this year.

This year, the department's capital budget for road improvements is $85.5 million, an increase of $32 million over the previous year. It's the third year in a row the capital portion of the roads budget has increased.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from four district offices located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
