TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Paving Begins on Northwest Arm Drive, Halifax Regional Municipality
Starting Monday, July 8, drivers using Northwest Arm Drive in Halifax are urged to use extra care and caution as work begins on almost five kilometres of the highway.
The road will be stripped down and repaved from Main Avenue in Fairview to Old Sambro Road in Spryfield. One side of the divided highway will be closed for work, with the traffic being re- routed. Motorists should take note that they will encounter two- way traffic.
The contract for this work was awarded to Dexter Construction Company Ltd. of Bedford on a tender bid of $1.82 million. The project is expected to be completed in August.
This year, the department's capital budget for road improvements is $85.5 million, an increase of $32 million over the previous year. It is the third straight year the capital portion of the roads budget has increased.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from four district offices located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
