Sydney Cabinet Office Remains Open
Premier John Hamm confirmed today, June 28, that the cabinet office in Sydney will remain open.
"With recent cabinet and staffing changes, our government felt it important to listen to the people of Cape Breton as to whether the cabinet office would continue to be a needed government service," said Premier Hamm. "Both business and community leaders expressed their support for the work done through the cabinet office in the past and urged our government to keep it open. We are acting positively on the advice of Cape Bretoners."
Economic Development Minister Cecil Clarke said it's another sign of the government recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities of Cape Breton. Nova Scotia's economic growth strategy, Opportunities for Prosperity, released in the fall of 2000, cited the specific needs and potential of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
"The cabinet office in Sydney is a service offered in no other region of the province," said Mr. Clarke. "As we continue to work towards building a new, stronger economy for Cape Breton, it's essential that Cape Bretoners have access to government decision- makers."
Premier Hamm, Mr. Clarke and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Angus MacIsaac used the cabinet office today to meet with Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor John Morgan and MPs Rodger Cuzner and Mark Eyking.
Last month, ministerial assistant Alfie MacLeod left his position in charge of the cabinet office to return to the private sector. Applications are being received through the executive council office. A replacement will be named later this summer or early in the fall.
