SPORT/RECREATION COMMISSION--Round One of Nova Scotia Surf League a Success
More than 80 lifeguards from four clubs competed in round one of the Nova Scotia Surf League lifesaving competition held this week at Melmerby Beach in Pictou County. The opening event included a two kilometre beach run, Taplin relay, rescue board relay, and beach flags race.
The Taplin relay is a three-person event involving a board race, swim race, and a running race. Each team member completes one of the three races. The winning team must finish all three races.
The beach flag race starts with up to six team members competing for five small batons. Team members race to pick up the batons. The team member who doesn't get a baton is out. This continues until there is one team member remaining.

The Nova Scotia Surf League is a five-round competition series for athletes who have a lifesaving qualification. They compete on the beach and in the ocean in various athletic events.
Round two of the Nova Scotia Surf League is scheduled for 2 p.m. on July 16 at Risser's Beach, Lunenburg Co.
