Highway 107 Repaving Announced

Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, has announced that a tender call has gone out to repave seven kilometres of Highway 107 along the Eastern Shore.

"This is a significant upgrade all the way from Exit 21 at East Chezzetcook to Trunk 7 at Musquodoboit Harbour," said Mr. Russell. "It's the kind of investment that will benefit local users of the highway and visitors during our busy tourist seasons."

Construction firms have until July 12 to submit bids on the project, which is expected to cost about $1.5 million. The department expects the work will be completed around the end of October.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works' 2002 capital budget for road improvements is $85.5 million, an increase of $32 million over 2001. It's the third year in a row that the capital portion of the roads budget has increased.

The department's highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Four district offices are located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
