The Winning Team for Yarmouth County
Yarmouth continues to be a success story for Register.com and the governments of Nova Scotia and Canada. Premier John Hamm took time during the Team Canada Atlantic trade mission to meet with some of the company's top officials today in New York.
"Since the announcement of Register.com coming to Yarmouth last spring, over 150 new jobs have been created in Yarmouth County, already exceeding the original employment targets," said the premier. "This is evidence that our government's economic growth strategy is making a positive difference in the lives of many Nova Scotians. Everybody wins through success stories like Register.com -- more Nova Scotians have jobs, a company expands and government has more revenues for priorities like health care and education."
Tom Roth, vice-president of human resources for Register.com, noted that Nova Scotia's well-trained workforce has been key to the Yarmouth centre's success. Headquartered in New York, Register.com is the second-largest registrar of domain names for the Internet.
"It's clear we made the right choice to invest and create jobs in Yarmouth County," said Mr. Roth. "Based on the success to date, our company is looking forward to exploring new business opportunities in Nova Scotia."
Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), noted the tremendous results of partnership between all levels of government on the project.
"The government of Canada was pleased to work in co-operation with the province of Nova Scotia and the local municipal governments to bring Register.com to Yarmouth," he said. "Our combined efforts created a great climate for investment and new jobs in the knowledge-based economy."
Premier Hamm and staff at Nova Scotia Business Inc. are promoting the province's trade and investment efforts during this week's Team Canada Atlantic trade mission to New York. The Crown corporation was established to implement part of Opportunities for Prosperity, Nova Scotia's first economic growth strategy in a decade.
Opportunities for Prosperity was launched in the fall of 2000 after months of broad consultation. In 2001, according to Statistics Canada, Nova Scotia had the second-highest rate of economic growth in the country, doubling the national rate.
"Our government made a commitment to deliver a growth strategy that works for the people of Nova Scotia," added Premier Hamm. "By working with Register.com and other firms, we are delivering on that commitment to create new jobs and opportunities for our province."
