Antigonish Annexation Application
The Town of Antigonish has filed a new application to annex a smaller portion of the County of Antigonish. The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has agreed that this application will replace the earlier application.
The town is now seeking to annex about 1,525 hectares (3,814 acres) surrounding it. The new application uses the river, railway lines and property lines as boundaries where possible.
The Utility and Review Board is consolidating the new application with the amalgamation application filed by the Municipality of the County of Antigonish. The board has directed the town and the county to prepare studies on a number of issues, including the financial and social effects of each application as well as policing, infrastructure and demographics.
The board has scheduled a hearing on Wednesday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Ninian Place, Antigonish. At that hearing, it will consider whether any additional studies are required as a result of the new application. Anyone who wishes to make comments on this issue are required to advise the clerk of the Utility and Review Board by June 7.
Depending upon the number of people who wish to make submissions, the board may conduct its hearing by telephone conference.
A copy of the town's new application may be reviewed at its office at 274 Main St., Antigonish, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or at the Utility and Review Board office, Suite 300, 1601 Lower Water St., Halifax.
