Play Explores Impact of Cancer Diagnosis
A thought-provoking play that explores the impact of a cancer diagnosis on patients and their families will be performed in three Nova Scotia communities this month. Commissioned by Cancer Care Nova Scotia, The Soul of the Maze is a creative collaboration between the Irondale Ensemble Project and Nova Scotia playwright Mary Colin Chisholm.
"The Soul of the Maze brings to life the many emotions and challenges patients and their families face in their battle against cancer," said Theresa Marie Underhill, chief operating officer, Cancer Care Nova Scotia. "It provides great insight and a true understanding of the ways in which a cancer diagnosis affects every part of our lives. It's a must-see for anyone who has had cancer or who knows someone who has had cancer."
The play follows the journey of Annie, who has been newly diagnosed with cancer, and Darren, who has been living with cancer. The audience learns of their struggles with the disease and the effect it has on them and their loved ones. The communication challenges explored in the play are not unique to cancer patients. Expressing fears, anxieties and hopes for the future to loved ones and to care-givers becomes increasingly difficult in the face of any life-threatening illness.
The following public performances will be held, each beginning at 7:30 p.m.:
- May 16, Auditorium, Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow
- May 21, Cafeteria, Meadowfields Community School, Yarmouth
- May 22, Clare Marie Auditorium, St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish
In addition, the play will be performed for health professionals attending oncology rounds at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre on May 30. It will also be performed for delegates of the 5th National Community Cancer Conference being held on May 31 in Halifax.
The Irondale Ensemble Project is Halifax-based theatre company that works with communities throughout Nova Scotia. The company has a dual focus: the creation of new works and the exploration of the processes of intuitive learning. Their production of The Soul of the Maze is an example of their talent in using theatre as a tool for thoughtful commentary on a topic of broad societal concern.
Mary Colin Chisholm is an actor, director and playwright. She sprinkles this serious subject with her wry humour.
Cancer Care Nova Scotia is a program of the Department of Health, created to reduce the burden of cancer on individuals, families and the health care system through prevention, screening, education and research.
