Safety Speaker in N.S. Schools

Nationally acclaimed safety speaker Cara Johnston returns to Nova Scotia this spring, bringing her message to more than 9,300 students in 14 schools.

Ms. Johnston's tour, from April 22 to 29, focuses on the choices open to teenagers faced with potentially dangerous decisions. Her twin sister was killed in a motor vehicle collision the day after their 18th birthday. Since then, Ms. Johnston has told her story across North America to more than 300,000 students, and she has appeared on numerous television and radio programs.

"We are thrilled that these vital safety messages will reach our high school students in another 14 schools across the province," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "Cara's message is powerful. It's emotional. Her honesty and openness draw her close to those who hear her. I thank her for making such a considerable contribution to safety education."

"We're happy to partner on this initiative to bring Cara to schools in the province," said Assistant Commissioner Dwight Bishop, commanding officer of the RCMP in Nova Scotia. "Cara's personal story reaches people and they truly hear her message."

Next week's tour is sponsored by the Highway 104 Western Alignment Corporation, RCMP, Atlantic Highways Management Corporation, Insurance Bureau of Canada and the government of Nova Scotia.
