Site Selected for New Shelburne High School
Students and staff at Shelburne High School are another step closer to their new school. The site has been selected for the new Shelburne Regional High School at Corbett's Corner on Route 3 in Shelburne.
"Students and staff have been anticipating this announcement," said Education Minister Jane Purves. "This brings us a step closer and we're on track to open the new school in September 2004 as originally planned."
The new school will be designed for grades 7 to 12 and will be about 75,000 square feet -- 27,000 larger than the existing school. The site selection team will look at the possibility of using existing school designs to help reduce costs and construction time.
The Department of Education will work with the school board to determine what upgrades and renovations are required at the existing school to ensure the safety of the students and teachers in the interim.
"The students and staff are pleased to see progress towards the new school," said Harold Locke, principal of Shelburne High. "We are also pleased to see that some upgrades and renovations will be made on our school to ensure the comfort of our students and staff for the next two years."
The site selection team reviewed 16 sites before recommending three to the minister. The department investigated the three recommended sites and determined Corbett's Corner on the Swansburg property to be preferred for the new school.
