Sir John A. Macdonald Assessment Update Released
An update on the status of the Sir John A. Macdonald high school assessment was released by the Department of Education and the school's communications committee today. The update outlines the scope of the testing and evaluation being conducted on the school building and grounds.
"We are releasing the assessment update to let the students, staff and community know what is happening in their school," said Education Minister Jane Purves. "Once the report and recommendations are complete we will work with the school board to determine the next steps for Sir John A."
The assessment is being conducted by the departments of Education and Transportation and Public Works and Maritime Testing Limited. O'Halloran Campbell consultants limited are co-ordinating the work. It includes a comprehensive evaluation of the school building and the site.
The assessment is focusing on indoor air quality, building structure, school layout, environmental conditions and access to the site. The mechanical and electrical systems and general maintenance and operations will also be evaluated.
"We are working closely with the Department of Education and consultants," said Stu Gourley, vice-chair of the school advisory council. "We're confident that the assessment will address the concerns of Sir John A. students and staff and the community."
Evaluations and tests on the building are nearing completion and indicate that the structure is in fair to good condition. Further tests are being conducted on the soil and water surrounding and beneath the school building. Test results will be incorporated into the full assessment report and recommendations.
The detailed assessment began in February and was significantly expanded when the school board closed the school on March 4. Sir John A. students are currently split-shifting at C.P. Allen High School in Bedford while the assessment continues.
An interim report was to be released in February, however the school closure gave the assessment team an opportunity to conduct additional tests which increased the scope of the evaluation.
The Department of Education is working with the Halifax Regional School Board, school staff and the school advisory council in preparation of the report and recommendations expected in late April.
