Mediator Appointed in Dalhousie Dispute

Environment and Labour Minister David Morse has appointed lawyer Milton Veniot to mediate the labour dispute at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association have been on strike since March 4.

"Mr. Veniot has been successful in bringing about positive conclusions to previous mediation cases," said Mr. Morse. "He is recognized as a noted and successful mediator and is known for his fairness."

Over the past few years, Mr. Veniot has served as the mediator for successful conclusions at The Cove Nursing Home, University College of Cape Breton and the Halifax Regional School Board.

Mr. Morse said that while the current dispute has been difficult for all stakeholders -- especially the students -- it's important to exercise patience and allow the collective-bargaining process to work.

The minister stated that the appointment of a mediator is a normal dispute-settling mechanism and part of collective bargaining.
