New Members and Chair for Provincial Health Council
PROVINCIAL HEALTH COUNCIL--New Members and Chair for Provincial Health Council
The Nova Scotia Provincial Health Council has four new members and a new chairperson.
The new appointees, confirmed last week by the legislature's all- party standing committee on human resources, are:
- Brenda Sabo, a resident of Dartmouth and co-ordinator of the Surgical Oncology Network, Cancer Care Nova Scotia;
- Walter Proctor, a retired educator and education administrator from Antigonish;
- Casey Mooy, a resident of Waterville and a financial sales and service representative;
- Quenta Tynes, a Halifax resident and co-ordinator of Graduate Student Employment Services at Dalhousie University and an active community supporter.
At a meeting on Thursday, March 7, the health council elected Vivian Farrell to the position of chairperson. Ms. Farrell will replace Barb Hart, whose term has expired. This was the first election held by the council under new legislation that enables it to choose its own chairperson from its membership.
Ms. Farrell, a former high-school teacher from Pictou, has been on the council since its reactivation in the fall of 1998. She is very active in her local community and serves as chair of the Literacy Association. She is also a member of the Pictou Regional Development Commission and is involved with various other organizations at the local and provincial levels.
The Provincial Health Council is a group of volunteers from across the province appointed by government. The council listens and responds to Nova Scotians on the issues of health status and the health-care system and provides advice to government on the development of comprehensive health policy.
