Input Sought for Proposed Food and Meat Regulations

AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Input Sought for Proposed Food and Meat Regulations

The Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is seeking public and industry comments on proposed amendments to the provincial meat plant inspection regulations and the consolidation of all food inspection regulations.

The department has spent two years reviewing all food inspection regulations in effect in Nova Scotia and about four years reviewing the meat plant inspection regulations. The proposed changes are expected to increase public safety, provide for consistent regulations across the province and set out an improved, risk-based approach to inspection.

The public is encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed regulations over the next six weeks.

These proposed regulations are available for review and comment by contacting the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food Safety Section, at 902-893-7473 or by visiting the department's Web site, at www.gov.ns.ca/nsaf/foodsafety/. Comments may be forwarded to Mike Horwich, Provincial Manager Food Safety, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, P.O. Box 550, Truro, B2N 5E3.

Comments will be accepted until April 3.
