Province Owns Tiverton Wharf
The provincial government takes ownership today of the Tiverton wharf in Digby County, as a result of a transfer announced today by the governments of Nova Scotia and Canada. A federal contribution of $400,000 is also part of the agreement.
One of the province's seven ferries operates from Tiverton wharf, providing daily service between Digby Neck and Long Island on the western shore of the Bay of Fundy.
"Provincial ownership of the Tiverton wharf is a clear sign of our commitment to the ferry service and the local economy," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "Funds we receive as part of the transfer agreement will be used for future repairs and upgrading, to make sure the wharf meets our needs for many years to come."
"The transfer of these port facilities to the government of Nova Scotia will benefit the operation of the provincially run ferry service," said Robert Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of David Collenette, Minister of Transport. "The facility is now properly placed in the hands of its primary user."
Under the National Marine Policy, announced in 1995, regional and local ports are being transferred to other interests.
