Minister Refers Auto Insurance to UARB

David Morse, Minister responsible for the Insurance Act, announced today he is referring the issue of rising automobile insurance premiums to the Utility and Review Board (UARB).

The review will examine rates to determine if they are excessive, inadequate, unfairly discriminatory, or otherwise unreasonable, and the board may order an adjustment.

"Many drivers across Atlantic Canada have experienced rising car insurance premiums over the past few months. I look forward to receiving the findings form this independent review," said Mr. Morse.

The UARB is expected to take about six months to complete its review. Meanwhile, an all-party economic development committee will hold a hearing on Feb. 5. Mr. Morse will meet soon with his Atlantic counterparts, who are all dealing with similar increases in rates.
