Junior Curling Program for Mabou

Sport and Recreation Minister Rodney MacDonald today announced $1,494 in Community Development funding to assist the start-up of a junior curling program in the Mabou Athletic Club.

"It's very important to create ways for young people to become involved in recreation and sport," said Mr. MacDonald. "It's an investment in their health, their social growth and the community."

"We set out to put a new program on the ice, other than hockey, for less-active young people," said Leslie McDaniel, co- ordinator/manager, Mabou Arena. "We were shocked at the response. Between 15 and 19 young people are showing up weekly and having a ball. They're becoming good curlers, finding it relaxing and fun. Now, some of our senior curlers are beginning to drop by to give the juniors some tips."

The Sport and Recreation Commission's funding helps with ice rental, instruction books, advertising and clinic costs.
