Winter Parking Regulations to Take Effect

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Winter Parking Regulations to Take Effect

Overnight parking will be banned in many smaller communities across Nova Scotia starting one week from today, on Monday, Dec. 17. The restrictions, based on the Winter Parking Regulations 2001/2002, are in effect until Sunday, March 31, 2002.

Parking will be restricted between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. in communities in 13 counties. The measures make it easier and safer for winter maintenance crews to clear roads of snow and ice.

Again this year, the province will publish the list of communities with restricted parking in newspapers throughout Nova Scotia. It will also be available next week on the department's Web site, at www.gov.ns.ca/tran .

Some people are exempt from the overnight parking ban:

  • doctors parked near their offices or homes and who are on- call;
  • members of the police, fire departments or armed forces who are on duty;
  • commercial drivers in the process of loading or unloading; and
  • drivers of public utility vehicles parked at or near their homes and who may be required to make emergency calls.

Drivers who ignore the regulations are subject to penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act.
