Holiday Season Message, 2001

As the Queen's representative in Nova Scotia, and on behalf of my husband Larry and our family, it is a pleasure to extend warm holiday greetings to all Nova Scotians.

For more than a year and a half I have delighted in my role as lieutenant-governor of this wonderful province. With each opportunity I have to meet its extraordinary people, I am continually impressed and proud to be a Nova Scotian.

As we near the end of the International Year of Volunteers, I take pride in saying that volunteerism is an integral part of the lives of Nova Scotians. Volunteers are the backbone to the many community projects, celebrations and observances throughout this province. From Dingwall to Digby, volunteers demonstrate a dedication and commitment that are second to none. I extend a thank you to each volunteer for the countless hours spent helping to better this province and the lives of those who call it home.

The rich culture and heritage of this province also become ever more apparent to me as I continue in my duties as lieutenant- governor. Nova Scotia is steeped in tradition and history. As we progress through an age of computerized services and technological advances, it becomes increasingly important to share our knowledge of the past with tomorrow's generations. To truly understand and appreciate where we are today as a province, we must ensure that our young people know from where we have come -- for a true understanding of the past and present will lead to a bright and productive future.

The holiday season is a time to be thankful for the many attributes that make Nova Scotia a wonderful province in which to live. It is also a time to give thanks for the love and support of our families and friends.

Among our friends we count the service men and women who are currently serving overseas. The sacrifice they and their families continue to make helps to ensure a better tomorrow for our children and grandchildren. On behalf of all Nova Scotians, thank you for your courage and your commitment. Know that as a province we stand behind you and wish for you a holiday season filled with the warmth of friendship.

His Honour joins me in wishing all Nova Scotians much happiness, peace, good health and love. May each one of you share in the joy of this holiday season and have a safe and prosperous new year.
