Ultimate Nature Guide Book Launch

On the crest of a cliff stands a man overlooking Chignecto Bay. He surveys an awe-inspiring view that fewer than one per cent of Nova Scotians have ever seen. That view is one of the many beautiful colour photographs in The Ultimate Nature Guide.

"You may not guess it, but those ordinary-looking sandstone cliffs are world famous," said author Gary Saunders. “They are full of coal-age fossils. Among the most spectacular are the cliffs at the old coal-mining village of Joggins.”

Join author Gary Saunders at the Museum of Natural History for the official launch of his book The Ultimate Nature Guide on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.

“I cannot imagine a much more ambitious title for a book than The Ultimate Nature Guide," said Michael Haynes, president of the Nova Scotia Trails Federation. "The scope of the challenge is immense; the promise of fulfillment is total. It’s a credit to Gary Saunders and the publishers that they’ve succeeded so well in their work."

The Ultimate Nature Guide is meant to be tucked in your glove compartment or in your pocket. Its theme is the roadside landscape, backdrop to travels, the tapestry of rocks, rivers, lakes trees, wildlife, clouds, and human activity that is the warp and weft of scenery. Mr. Saunders gives voice to the Nova Scotia landscape through geology, history, natural oddities, quotations, things to see and do and descriptions of flora and fauna.

Visitors to the Museum of Natural History will have the chance to hear Mr. Saunders read selections from the Ultimate Nature Guide, buy the book if they wish and have it signed by the author. Refreshments will be served.

Admission to the reading is free. Call 902-424-7353 for information. The Museum of Natural History is located on 1747 Summer St., Halifax.

The Ultimate Nature Guide was co-published by The Nova Scotia Museum and Nimbus Publishing Ltd., with the support of the Department of Tourism and Culture.
