Old Fashioned Christmas More Significant Than Ever

For five years, the Old Fashioned Christmas in Sherbrooke Village has given people the opportunity to engage in holiday celebrations.

Judging by the crowds this year and the comments of those attending, the desire to celebrate has become stronger than ever.

Participation in the opening night candle light procession was up more than 10 per cent and it is estimated that between 1,500 and 2,000 people enjoyed the entertainment, treats, fireworks and light displays. Visitors from all over Nova Scotia came to take part in the event.

"People have raised their level of support. They have done everything from providing food for events to sponsoring the lights and decorations. Some municipal councillors have even made personal donations, which has helped us get closer to our goal of decorating every building in the village," said Brenda Alexander, Old Fashioned Christmas Committee Chair. "We're particularly proud of the work done by the committee and volunteers."

Craft show attendance was up slightly over last year's first weekend, while attendance at children's activities was up 25 per cent over last year's entire two weekend total. The Old Fashioned Christmas Concert and the Ecumenical Choir Service also saw a seven per cent and 25 per cent, increase in attendance respectively.

New events such as the Christmas Groaning Board Buffet and the Lions Pancake Breakfast exceeded expectations. Local businesses reported good sales for the weekend as well.

Old Fashioned Christmas continues from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. For more information call 1-888-743-7845 or visit the Old Fashioned Christmas Web site at museum.gov.ns.ca/sv/christmas.html .
