New Bridge Opens in Cape Breton

The Church Cross Bridge in the Middle River area of Victoria Co., officially opened to traffic today.

"This is great news for Middle River residents and the surrounding community," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "This structure is important to the community and we expect it to serve their needs for many years."

"It is wonderful to have the communities of Middle River connected again," said Chuck Thompson, chair of the community committee that pushed for the new structure. "The community appreciates the government's willingness to listen and be responsive."

The new bridge is a steel-panel lane-and-a-half structure that cost about $400,000 to build. The previous bridge was damaged when struck by a snow plow last February. Work on the new bridge began in July.
