MARITIME PREMIERS--Chief Executive Officer Appointed to Higher Education Commission

The Council of Maritime Premiers today announced the recent appointment of Mireille Duguay as chief executive officer of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.

Ms. Duguay has been an employee of the commission since July 1996, most recently in the position of director of academic planning and research. She has also held senior positions in other higher education organizations, namely senior policy advisor with the Franco-Ontarian Education and Training Council and director of research with the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada.

In addition, Ms. Duguay has undertaken independent research for numerous organizations and has been a lecturer at the Department of Political Science at the University of Ottawa.

Ms. Duguay received a Bachelor of Social Sciences as well as an Masters of Arts in Political Science from the University of Ottawa. She brings to the position an extensive understanding of governmental, political and administrative processes, as well as experience and knowledge of the commission's role and responsibilities, client institutions and stakeholders.

Ms. Duguay replaces Carmelita Boivin-Cole, who served the commission as chief executive officer since October 1998.

The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission was established in 1974 by the Council of Maritime Premiers. Its mandate is "to assist the provinces and the institutions in attaining a more efficient and effective utilization and allocation of resources in the field of higher education in the region."

The commission's mandate was renewed in 1997 to focus on service to students and to emphasize its work on quality assurance, information management, and other co-operative regional arrangements.
