PREMIER'S OFFICE--Premier Hamm and Legislature Pay Tribute to Clarke
Members of the legislature today unanimously approved a resolution congratulating George Elliot Clarke on winning the Governor General's poetry prize for his book Execution Poems.
The resolution, introduced by Premier John Hamm, recognized Mr. Clarke's outstanding talent and his ability to make language into art.
"George Elliott Clarke continues to bring a distinctively Atlantic Canadian voice to poetry," said Premier Hamm. "His talent and successes are an inspiration to aspiring Nova Scotia writers."
Mr. Clarke is the first poet of African heritage to receive this award and the first Atlantic Canadian poet to receive it since 1975. He was born in Windsor, Hants Co., and raised in Halifax.
