Post Cards of Thanks Program
HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY -Post Cards of Thanks Program
This month, Grade 6 students from across Nova Scotia have been given the opportunity to send a personal thank you to a veteran.
The Nova Scotia legislature's all-party standing committee on veterans affairs is sponsoring the Post Card of Thanks program for the fourth year.
This week, students were given a post card and a stamp so they could write to a veteran in their community. The program is endorsed by the Royal Canadian Legion - Nova Scotia Command.
The cards feature the role Canada's armed forces play in maintaining and promoting peace worldwide. They are provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and are part of the National Post Cards for Peace Program.
The postage is paid for by this year's corporate sponsors, the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and the PanCanadian Energy Corp.
"Programs such as the Post Card of Thanks help children to understand our history and the sacrifices made by veterans," said Larry LeBlanc, vice-president, East Coast Operations for the PanCanadian Energy Corp. "PanCanadian is proud to be a part of this program."
William Langille, chair of the standing committee on veterans affairs, underlines the value of the program.
"This project gives students the opportunity to express their appreciation for the role that veterans played in the preservation of our freedom in Canada," he said.
Nova Scotia is the only province to maintain a standing committee on veterans affairs. Other members of the committee include: Cecil O'Donnell, Mark Parent, John Chataway, Frank Chipman, John Holm, Jerry Pye, Dave Wilson and Wayne Gaudet.
