Long Delays at Canso Causeway

The Canso Causeway will be reduced to sporadic one-lane traffic this afternoon and tonight, due to last night's washout of nearly 30 metres of roadbed.

Transportation and Public Works crews opened the road briefly late this morning to ease the backlog, which stretched several kilometers on both sides of the causeway.

The wind and wave action last night took out lengthy sections of rock along the causeway near Auld's Cove, by the concrete plant. The strong winds also overturned a tractor-trailer rig.

Drivers are advised that repair crews will need to stop traffic intermittently, which could mean long waits of several hours until one lane can be reopened to ease congestion.

While repairs are being made, drivers are asked to observe all safety signs and directions as they make their way slowly across the causeway.
