Young Nova Scotian Honoured for Courage

PREMIER'S OFFICE- Young Nova Scotian Honoured for Courage

Premier John Hamm will honour a young Nova Scotian's bravery this weekend in Yarmouth.

In July, Jean-Paul Surette, a 14-year-old resident of Amirault Hills, Yarmouth Co. rescued a boy at Port Maitland Beach. Seven-year-old Jarrett Deveau had been playing on an inflatable toy when the tide started to go out, pushing him away from the shore. Not knowing how to swim, Jarrett was trapped on the toy. Without hesitation or concern for his own safety, Jean-Paul swam out to the boy and pulled him to shore.

"This was a tremendous act of courage on the part of Jean-Paul," said Premier Hamm. "On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I am honoured to be able to pay tribute to this brave young Nova Scotian."

The premier will present Jean-Paul with a certificate of congratulations at a dinner on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. The dinner will be held at the Lions Community Centre, Parade Street, Yarmouth.
