Bridge Open During Celtic Colours
Motorists using Highway 105 in Cape Breton are reminded that the Seal Island Bridge will remain open 24 hours a day during the Celtic Colours International Festival, from Oct. 5 to Oct. 13.
Construction crews have started a three-year project to replace the deck on the 40-year-old structure. During the project, one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times except for three early morning closures each week between midnight and 6 a.m., Wednesday to Friday. After the closure Friday morning, the next scheduled closure will not be in effect until the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 17.
With the holiday weekend approaching, the department expects an increase in bridge traffic. Construction crews remind drivers to slow down and pay special attention while approaching and crossing the bridge. Recently, drivers and construction crews have been put at risk by vehicles running red lights.
A toll-free bridge information line has been set up to provide up-to-the-minute public notices. Since Sept. 17, 350 people have called with questions or comments. The toll-free number is 1-866- 389-8686.
The department has also been working closely with Cape Breton media outlets and local business and tourist organizations to publish regular advertisements and to distribute brochures.
