HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY--Elected Officials' Salary Increases to be Determined in New Way

Murray Scott, Speaker of the House of Assembly, said today the
legislature's Internal Economy Board made a unanimous decision to recommend that no Commission of Inquiry on the Remuneration of Elected Provincial Officials be appointed this year.

Instead, MLAs would receive a salary increase in 2002 equal to the average percentage increase paid to the members of the civil service during 2001.

The board's recommendation, an amendment to Section 45 of the House of Assembly Act, will be considered by the legislature during the fall session.
