Waterfront Organization Wins Honour Award
Halifax's Waterfront Development Corporation Limited received an award today in Brooklyn, New York, during The Waterfront Center's 19th annual international conference.
The Waterfront Center is a Washington-based non-profit education and urban planning organization, formed in 1981 in the belief that waterfronts are unique, finite resources.
In a juried competition, three entries, Halifax Waterfront Rejuvenation, Halifax Harbourwalk, and Open Space and Development Plan, were combined and given an honour award in the category Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse. A total of 71 entries were submitted to this year's Excellence on the Waterfront Awards.
"The Halifax waterfront is the jewel in the crown in the capital region of Nova Scotia. Our principal objective was to bring people back to the waterfront and make it a pleasant and safe place to be," said Eric Thomson, chair of the Waterfront Development Corporation Limited. "Winning this award proves to us that we've succeeded in our objective."
The provincial crown corporation acquires, manages and develops property in designated areas in Bedford, Dartmouth and Halifax. It includes planning, marketing and promotion designed to attract public use of the waterfronts.
Co-entrants for this award are Lydon Lynch Architects Ltd., O'Halloran Campbell Engineering and EDM Environmental Design and Management.
