4-H Show to Showcase Nova Scotia's Youth
Nearly 3,500 members and leaders will proudly showcase Nova Scotia's 4-H program at their provincial show, from Sept. 28 to 30, at the Hants County Exhibition Grounds in Windsor. Ernest Fage, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, invites the public to attend the free weekend events.
This is the largest independent provincial 4-H show in Canada and organizers expect 2,400 members, 1,000 adult leaders and 10,000 visitors to participate.
"This is a well-rounded program designed to help young people become community leaders. They are great ambassadors for the youth in our province," said Fage. "The Nova Scotia 4-H show is an incredible display of sportsmanship, teamwork and voluntarism. I salute the 4-H members and their adult leaders."
This is the 24th year for Nova Scotia's 4-H provincial show. It gives members the opportunity to showcase their project achievements through more than 40 skill-developing projects. Livestock competitions, a fashion show, a floral arranging competition, a market steer, lamb and turkey auctions and selections for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto are highlights of the weekend event.
Each year a different county or region hosts the event, and this year the Kings County 4-H Council has been given the honour with the assistance of the Hants and Annapolis county councils.
"Hosting a show of this size is an exercise in team work," said Elizabeth Crouse, manager of 4-H and Rural Organizations with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. "It's wonderful to see members, leaders, family members and other volunteers come together every year to make it a successful event."
The 4-H program has been involved in Nova Scotia's rural communities for 79 years. It offers a variety of opportunities for young people to learn new skills, develop friendships and travel.
