TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Technical Reviews of Preliminary Report to Begin

The Nova Scotia and federal governments have received data from chronic risk assessments conducted in the North of Coke Ovens area in Sydney.

The chronic risk assessment draft report, prepared by a team of risk assessors and toxicologists, and in consultation with other health specialists, comprises four volumes with over 5,000 pages of complex data on individual chronic risk assessments and an overall community-wide assessment for the North of Coke Ovens area.

This draft report will be reviewed by government experts in order to develop action plans for individual residents living in the area north of the coke ovens. Solid, science-based decisions that will benefit the entire community can be made only through careful consideration of the data from the draft chronic health risk assessment. Provincial and federal governments are committed to working as quickly as possible to complete the technical review and share the results with the community.

The final report and a federal/provincial action plan will be shared with the community and with individual residents.

As soon as the technical review is complete, meetings will be arranged with each homeowner in the North of Coke Ovens area to discuss the findings of their individual chronic health risk assessment.

The findings from the chronic health risk assessments in the North of Coke Ovens area will provide solid, science-based information from which to make good decisions for the long term.
