Western Province Hammerheads Win All Women Competition

The Western Province Hammerheads placed first in the 2001 Nova Scotia All Women Lifeguard Competition held on July 17 at Rissers Beach, Lunenburg Co.

Six teams participated in the event which also served as the second round of the Nova Scotia Surf League competition series. Thirty-two of the province's female lifeguards vied for top positions in the event's eight competitions.

The Western Province team was led by captain Nancy Witty of Wolfville. Ms. Witty tied with Lori Borgal of Halifax for the individual female aggregate point award with 134 points. Ms. Witty earned victories in the Run-Paddle-Run and teamed with Ms. Borgal to win the Rescue Board Rescue. Ms. Borgal was victorious in the Canadian Ironwoman and the Run-Swim-Run.

Finishing in second place was the team representing the Halifax Regional Municipality's Beaches program. Captained by Dayna Wojcik of Hammonds Plains, who tied for the team lead with 59 points, the team also had key performances from Sue Girard of Halifax who scored 59 points, and Tara Bellefontaine of Bedford who scored 58.

The Central Province Makos won the first round of Surf League competition and placed third overall, scoring a total of 331 points. Rookies Alison Spurr and Jessica McLellan, both of Halifax, guided the Makos to their third place finish, scoring 120 and 98 points respectively.

Other participating teams were the Dalplex Lifesaving Club with a fourth place finish, the Cape Breton Threshers finished fifth, and the Bridgewater Pool placed sixth. Round three of the Nova Scotia Surf League is scheduled for Monday, July 30 at Inverness Beach.

The Nova Scotia Surf League is operated by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch. The Lifesaving Society is the governing body for lifesaving, a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

The following are overall and event results from the competition:

  • Western Province: 486 points. The top performers were Nancy Witty of Wolfville with 134 points and Lori Borgal of Halifax with 134 points.

  • Halifax Regional Municipality's Beaches:354 points. The top performers were Dayna Wojcik of Hammonds Plains with 59 points and Sue Girard of Halifax with 59 points.

  • Central Province: 331 points. The top performer was Alison Spurr of Halifax with 120 points.

  • Dalplex: 166 points. The top performer was Carolyn Reardon of Halifax with 52 points.

  • Cape Breton: 100 points. The top performer was Margaret MacDonald of Judique with 48 points.

  • Bridgewater:17 points. The top performer was Katy Chancey of Bridgewater with 17 points.
