Top Female Lifeguards to Compete
The province's top female lifeguards will compete in the fourth annual Nova Scotia All-Women Lifeguard Competition on Tuesday, July 17, at Rissers Beach Provincial Park, Lunenburg Co.
Female lifeguards compete in either team or individual events, including the run-swim-run, iron woman and beach flags.
Registration is at noon and the day's events begin at 1 p.m. The competition is intended to promote and encourage participation of women in the sport of lifesaving.
Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each event and trophies are awarded to the team and individual acquiring the most overall points throughout the competition. Award presentations take place on the beach following the last event of the day.
For the first time, the Nova Scotia All-Women Lifeguard Competition has been included as a sanctioned event in the Nova Scotia Surf League, a series of five lifesaving events throughout the summer.
Club teams accumulate points throughout the series by attending sanctioned competitions throughout Nova Scotia. In Round 1, at Melmerby Beach in Pictou County, the Central Province Makos were the winners, accumulating 588 points. Results are posted on the Internet at www.nsls.ns.ca
The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch, operates the Nova Scotia Surf League. The Lifesaving Society is the governing body for lifesaving -- a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
