Libraries Gear Up for Summer Reading Program

As summer approaches, public libraries across the province are gearing up for this year’s Summer Reading Program, Don’t Bug me...I’m Reading! Ne m’embete pas...je lis!

The official start for most libraries begins this week, but activities and fun will continue all summer long.

The Halifax Regional Library’s gala launch began this morning at Alderney Landing Theatre. Schoolchildren from HRM who participated in last year’s program filled the theatre for games and activities, including a presentation by children’s author Budge Wilson, speaking on the importance of reading. The library''s Summer Reading Web site occurred at the same event.

Activities are planned by all nine regional libraries. These include crafts and storytelling at Cape Breton Regional Library; school visits in Colchester-East Hants by Teen Friends of the Library; and Cumberland Regional’s popular "Books at the Beach" event.

Studies have shown that, by continuing to read throughout the summer, students can maintain and improve the reading levels they established during the school year. The Summer Reading Program in libraries encourages children to read books during the summer, and offers incentives and prizes to keep them motivated. T-shirts, sweatshirts, bookmarks, buttons and stickers are some of the items children can win.

Last year, approximately 9,500 children participated in the Summer Reading Program.
