N.S. Lifeguard Service Added in Yarmouth, Clare

SPORT/RECREATION COMMISSION--N.S. Lifeguard Service Added in Yarmouth, Clare

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service will partner with local sponsors to provide lifeguard services at Lake Milo Boat Club near Yarmouth and Mavilette Beach in Clare Municipality.

The lifeguard service will provide fully trained, competent lifeguards and the municipalities of Yarmouth and Clare will cover the cost.

At Lake Milo, the service was previously provided by Yarmouth Leisure Services. Mavilette was previously unsupervised.

“Where water is concerned, public safety is important,” said Sport and Recreation minister Rodney MacDonald.

“Partnering to increase supervision is good news for everyone.”

Lifeguards will be on duty daily at Lake Milo Boat Club from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mavilette Beach will be supervised on weekends only, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lifeguard season at both sites will begin June 30 and end Aug. 26.

“We are very excited to be partnering with the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service to provide safe swimming for the people of Yarmouth,” said Jeff Gushue, director of Yarmouth Leisure Services. “Partnering with the NSLS ensures delivery of top- quality lifeguard service at Lake Milo Boat Club.”

Joanne Lebans, recreation co-ordinator for the Municipality of Clare, was also excited about the new service.

“The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service has a reputation of providing high-quality lifeguard services, and has a perfect record of no- drownings to back it up,” said Ms. Lebans. “Residents of Clare can now visit the beach knowing competent lifeguards are on duty.”

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service supervises selected provincial beach parks and municipal beach sites throughout Nova Scotia from late June to late August. The addition of Lake Milo Boat Club and Mavilette Beach brings its total number of beaches supervised to 17.

The service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
