Nova Scotia Company Signs Agreement with IBM
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT--Nova Scotia Company Signs Agreement with IBM
A Nova Scotia information technology company has signed an important agreement to form a strategic alliance in Atlanta today, as part of the Team Canada Atlantic trade mission. Atlantic Learning Innovations Network (ALIN), of the Strait of Canso area, will partner with IBM Canada K12 Ltd. to cooperatively develop, implement and support technology-enhanced educational programs. As a result, ALIN will be recognized as a leading educational partner of IBM in a distinctive long-term partnership.
Wilfred MacNeil, CEO of ALIN, says the partnership will give the Port Hastings company access to a large North American market through IBM’s marketing channels.
"It also opens up access to IBM research and development for applications for professional development and labour market development technology tools," he said.
IBM will benefit from ALIN’s expertise in rolling out Internet applications into rural communities.
"IBM is delighted that we have been selected to partner with ALIN to provide e-learning opportunities," said John Schiener, mathematics/virtual schooling consultant with IBM’s Business Innovation Services in Atlanta.
"Our agreement today strengthens an existing relationship. As the leader in e-business, IBM looks forward to working with ALIN in providing technology-based solutions to transform teaching and learning," he said.
The companies are signing the alliance based on shared objectives of bringing Internet-based benefits to rural communities. The agreement sets out an ongoing relationship between ALIN and IBM so that both organizations can continue to collaborate.
Premier John Hamm said that he is pleased that a Nova Scotia company has reached a deal with such a high-profile partner.
"This is further proof that Nova Scotia companies can compete with anybody in the world and succeed," he said.
Last year, Nova Scotia trade missions generated $24 million in new sales for participating companies.
"I am proud to take part in the signing of this alliance," said Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "We came here to raise our exposure in a marketplace with expanding opportunities. Today is just one example of how we have done that."
This week’s trade mission to Atlanta concludes May 16.
