TOURISM/CULTURE--Nova Scotia To Host Attractions Canada Awards Gala

Nova Scotia will host the third annual Attractions Canada Awards Gala at Pier 21 in Halifax on May 23.

This prestigious event is the only countrywide competition aimed at promoting the quality, success, innovation and diversity of Canada’s attractions. The expected 200 people attending will be treated to vignettes of Nova Scotia entertainment throughout the evening.

“Hosting an event of this magnitude provides our Nova Scotia attractions with a great opportunity to increase their visibility and showcase our province’s unique natural, historical and cultural heritage,” said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism and Culture.

This year, 10 Nova Scotia organizations are competing in a variety of categories. A total of 98 finalists from across Canada will receive recognition, but only 14 will be presented with the Attractions Canada grand prize.

Those 14 winners will receive extensive national exposure from Attractions Canada’s media campaign. Winners will be selected by a national jury comprised of well-known figures from the tourism industry, the media and business.

The Nova Scotia nominees in their respective categories are:

  • Highland Village Museum: Developed Outdoor Site, Category A.

  • Sherbrooke Village: Developed Outdoor Site, Category B.

  • Greenwood Military Aviation Museum: Indoor Site, Category A.

  • Alexander Keith’s Nova Scotia Brewery: Indoor Site, Category B.

  • The Ship’s Company Theatre: Cultural Event, Category A.

  • Celtic Colours International Festival: Cultural Event, Category B.

  • Vince Ryan Memorial Hockey Tournament: Sporting Event, Category A.

  • Highlands Links Golf Course: Leisure & Amusement Centre, Recreational or Sporting Venue - Category B.

  • Highlands Links Golf Course: Attraction of National or International Interest.

  • Pier 21 - New Attraction.

“Nova Scotia has many outstanding attractions that draw visitors to our province and generate substantial economic revenue for our communities.” said Judith Cabrita, managing director of the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS).

“Having this event in Nova Scotia is another opportunity to receive national recognition of our exceptional attractions that encourage travellers to make Nova Scotia a destination of choice,” she said.
