Businesses Support Canada Games Team

Five businesses have come forward to offer their support to Team Nova Scotia athletes who will participate in the 2001 Canada Games this summer.

The Atlantic Lottery Corp., the Halifax Daily News, Mee Sportswear, Microsoft, and Global TV will endorse the teams. Support will also come from the Government of Nova Scotia through the Sport and Recreation Commission and Sport Nova Scotia.

Corporate support comes in the form of direct financial contributions, and complimentary goods and services.

“We are delighted to have these sponsorships in place,” said Liz Pace, chair of Nova Scotia’s Canada Games Management Group. “This type of endorsement from the business community is so important to team morale and our overall success in the games.”

The first Canada Games were held in the winter of 1966 in Quebec City to coincide with Canada’s 1967 Centennial Celebrations. This summer in and around London, Ont., 22 teams representing 455 athletes, coaches and managers and four cultural representatives will compete for Nova Scotia.

In keeping with the Year of the Volunteer, this is the third Canada Games at which Nova Scotia’s mission staff is made up totally of volunteers. Volunteers also give their time to Nova Scotia’s Canada Games Management Group and many more volunteers throughout the province are working to ensure successful involvement in the games.

Tickets for the games went on sale in March. They can be obtained by logging on to the 2001 Canada Games Web site at: www.2001canadagames.com or by calling 1-866-773-2001.

Opening ceremonies in Ontario will be held on Aug. 11 in London, St. Thomas, Woodstock, Grand Bend and the University of Western Ontario.
