Colour of School Zone Signs to Change

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Colour of School Zone Signs to Change

Two traffic safety signs will be changing colour in a move to protect children in school zones.

The School Zone and End School Area signs will be changed to black on fluorescent yellow green. They are currently white on blue.

"This is a positive step forward for the safety of our children," said Ron Russell, minister of Transportation and Public Works. "This will create a distinctive sign for school zones across the province, making these areas more prominent to the motoring public."

The blue colour traditionally used for the school zone signs has lost its uniqueness in recent years due to the prevalence of the colour blue in tourist attraction signs.

This change will also comply with a recommendation of the Transportation Association of Canada.

The existing white on blue signs may be maintained until June 20, 2002.

Mr. Russell formally revised the Traffic Sign Regulations of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act this week.
