Energy Strategy Workshops Announced
The Nova Scotia government is moving ahead with the next step in the development of a long-term energy strategy for the province.
Robert Fournier has been appointed to lead public discussion at a series of workshops throughout the province. These workshops are an important component of the government’s broad consultation process, which also includes public submissions and regional meetings with stakeholders.
"The objective of this public consultation process is to hear directly from Nova Scotians on the choices that will provide optimum benefits over the long term," said Gordon Balser, Minister responsible for the Petroleum Directorate. "That’s why it’s important that as many Nova Scotians as possible participate in the development of this new energy strategy."
Dr. Fournier is a professor of oceanography at Dalhousie University in Halifax with extensive advisory/consultative experience. He was chair of the joint review panel that reported on the environmental and socio-economic implications of the Sable Offshore Energy Project and the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline project. He is currently a member of the Premier’s Energy Council.
Dr. Fournier will co-chair a total of seven public workshops throughout the province. Each session will include a local co-chair. The sessions will be held in Bible Hill, May 1; Yarmouth, May 23; Middleton, May 24; Sydney, May 30; Port Hawkesbury, May 31; Halifax, June 5; and Bridgewater, June 7. Details on the workshops can be obtained by visiting the Energy Strategy Web site, www.gov.ns.ca/energystrategy , or calling toll-free 1-800-704-5411.
"The plan is to have as many people and groups as possible who are interested in our energy industry contribute and participate in the energy-sector review in an open and effective manner," said Natural Resources Minister Ernest Fage.
In addition to the public workshops, the energy strategy will develop from presentations, submissions, research, interviews and analysis, including assessments of the major trends in provincial, national and international energy sectors.
A discussion paper has been published to assist the public in providing input. A copy of this document and information on how to provide direct input into the strategy review process can be obtained at the Web site or the toll-free number.
