Spring weight restrictions on Nova Scotia roads are expected to be in effect starting March 12. The restrictions on heavy trucks protect roads -- which are weakened by the wet spring weather - and help prevent severe breakup. The wet conditions and lack of frost contribute to potholes and deterioration.

"We are monitoring the situation daily," said Minister Ronald Russell. "We will close roads as weather conditions dictate."

A complete listing of roads exempt from spring weight restrictions will be published in major newspapers across the province in March. Information will also be posted on the Department Web site.

The minister of transportation and public works has the right to revise restriction zones, weight restrictions and the list of roads exempt as conditions warrant.
