Sharing the Outdoors
Living and Leading the Journey is a conference on making the outdoor experience safe, enjoyable and protective of the environment. Intended for outdoor leaders and anyone who enjoys the outdoors, Sharing the Outdoors will be held at White Point Beach Resort from April 20 to April 22.
"Taking steps to improve the knowledge and practices of outdoor leaders and enthusiasts will help protect and preserve the natural outdoors we cherish," said Sport and Recreation Minister Jane Purves.
Keynote speaker Brian Keating, director of the Conservation Outreach Department of the Calgary Zoo, will talk about the fragility of outdoor environments. Mr. Keating, who considers Nova Scotia to be like an island in its unique ecology and cultural diversity, will also discuss the pros and cons of island eco-tourism. He will share his knowledge of environmental pressures experienced in Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, the Galapagos and other lesser-known islands.
More than 20 renowned outdoor experts will deliver 16 workshops addressing topics such as outdoor education, adventure tourism, risk management, wilderness first aid, navigation, the forest, and native water craft. Evening entertainment includes music, a ceilidh, storytelling and a film festival.
Sharing the Outdoors is an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to share their knowledge and experience, and to build a strong network protecting the beauty and future of Nova Scotia' s outdoors.
The conference is organized by The Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission, the Nova Scotia Outdoor Leadership Committee and the Nova Scotia Adventure Tourism Association.
