Kids Interview Lieutenant-Governor

Five Halifax-area students will interview Lt.-Gov. Myra Freeman at Government House on Wednesday, Jan. 10, to get a kid's-eye view of what it means to be lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia.

"Children and education are two of my priorities," said Lt.-Gov. Freeman. "I remain interested in seeing young people encouraged to be the best they can be and to learn about our heritage. This interview gives them a wonderful opportunity to learn and lets me share what I've learned with them and their audience."

The students are junior reporters for Parents 'n' Kids, a family magazine distributed across Nova Scotia. They will ask the lieutenant-governor about topics they feel will interest children across the province, ranging from the lieutenant-governor's role to where the Queen sleeps when she visits.

The reporters--Brennan Cleary, Katherine Crooks, Katie Anderson, Kerith Gordon and Malcolm Bird--are all 10 and 11 years old. They've covered several stories for the magazine, such as restaurants that welcome children, the best places to play with kids, and reviews of toys, movies, books and software.

Upcoming stories include Katherine's interview with actor and comedian Mary Walsh and Brennan's story on a young neighbour with a physical disability who is full of spirit and ambition.

"The junior reporters are helping us achieve part of the magazine's mandate, namely, promotion of literacy and a love of learning," said Parents 'n' Kids publisher Sondra Rutman. "We are proud to support these children in their search for answers and to provide them with opportunities and experiences."

NOTE TO EDITORS: At 4 p.m., there will be an opportunity for media to interview the junior reporters before they meet with the lieutenant-governor.
